How can artificial intelligence and virtual reality improve teaching and learning in human medicine? This is the focus of the collaboration between Prof. Dr. Anja Bräuer, Director of the Department of Anatomy at the University of Oldenburg, and Prof. Dr. Peter Haddawy, a professor in the Faculty of Communication and Information Technology (ICT) at Mahidol University in Thailand and Research Ambassador for the University of Bremen.

Transkript

00:00 – 00:07

Peter Haddawy: Our virtual system allows users to select and enlarge an anatomical structure for detailed study.

00:20 – 00:37

Peter Haddawy: I’ve worked extensively with AI and virtual reality in medicine, and Anja suggested expanding this to improve teaching by integrating pathology into anatomy lessons.

Question: What does your collaboration look like specifically?

00:37 – 00:48

Anja Bräuer: In our collaboration, we’ve combined expertise in medical education with digital innovation.

00:48 – 01:00

Peter Haddawy: This partnership thrives when team members have experience with the technology and can envision how to apply it effectively.

Question: What do you achieve together that you wouldn’t be able to achieve alone?

01:01 – 01:17

Anja Bräuer: With the use of digital tools we’re creating, students have the flexibility to learn and review anatomy anytime, anywhere – not just during lectures or lab sessions.

01:17 – 01:41

Peter Haddawy: In the virtual environment, users can explore both anatomy and pathological conditions, zooming in on specific structures to understand them better.

Question: What else would you like to achieve together?

01:41 – 02:06

Anja Bräuer: With virtual rooms, we could enable real-time collaboration, independent of location. Students could then gain insight into real medical cases by connecting with surgeons in the operating room.

02:06 – 02:14

Peter Haddawy: Our work together has created a strong foundation that we’re committed to building on.

02:14 – 02:23

Anja Bräuer: I’d like to use digital tools to further develop and modernize anatomy teaching.

02:23 – 02:35

Peter Haddawy: It would be interesting to integrate AI capabilities into teaching through an automated tutor that supports students.
