Computer science and mathematics join forces. Two professors share a passion for tiny houses and explain how energy technology is the connecting link in their collaboration: Prof. Dr. Sebastian Lehnhoff, professor of energy informatics at the University of Oldenburg and chairman of the board of the affiliated OFFIS institute, and Prof. Dr. Christof B\u00fcskens, professor of optimization and optimal control at the Center for Industrial Mathematics at the University of Bremen. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

Question: When and how did you meet?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\nChristof B\u00fcskens: That must have been ten or twelve years ago.<\/p>\n

\nSebastian Lehnhoff: I went to Bremen as part of a research project at the Center for
Technomathematics and met up with Christof.<\/p>\n

\nChristof B\u00fcskens: And we realized that we shared the same interests. And then, quite
consciously, a kind of friendship began that has lasted to this day. <\/p>\n

Question: What defines your colleague? As a person, as a colleague? <\/strong><\/h4>\n

\nSebastian Lehnhoff: He is someone who brings this calm to complex and complicated problems, and then works with us to figure out how to put that into practice.<\/p>\n

\nChristof B\u00fcskens: His best quality is being goal-oriented without wanting to step on anyone else\u2019s toes. You can tell how passionate he is about knowledge transfer and practical application. And in this way, there was a wonderful connection in terms of content right from the start. And that\u2019s something that the mathematics or industrial mathematics department in Bremen excels at. <\/p>\n

Question: What does your collaboration look like specifically?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\nSebastian Lehnhoff: We, as computer scientists actually stem from the regulation and control of individual processes. It gets interesting now, when I have several of them and have to orchestrate them in unison, for example, if I have millions of them or 10 million of them. Then that kind of goes beyond our area of expertise, or definitely beyond our area of expertise. <\/p>\n

What else would you like to achieve together?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\nChristof B\u00fcskens: The biggest thing we\u2019re currently working on is actually developing a shared vision that will ideally bring us closer together.<\/p>\n

\nSebastian Lehnhoff: Here at OFFIS, as part of a science communication project, we\u2019ve developed a tiny house\u2014a mobile station. And Christof is now planning a tiny house village. That\u2019s really exciting. How that will work together with our hardware. <\/p>\n

\nChristof B\u00fcskens: Then it would be nice to bring the village and the Tiny House from Oldenburg together in the future. Perhaps in public squares somewhere between Oldenburg and Bremen, to conduct energy research together and educate the public accordingly.<\/p>\n

Question: What might be your next work\/research goal?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\nSebastian Lehnhoff: With the Northwest Alliance, we want to bring excellent basic research much more widely to the region. We want to show that this makes a difference. <\/p>\n

\nChristof B\u00fcskens: The goal is actually to perhaps make the world a little better when it comes to energy issues.<\/p>\n<\/div>
