Tominaga is a leading figure in her field, with a research focus on the structure of the ocean floor and the underlying layers, as well as the deep-sea processes that impact the oceans, climate, and marine ecosystems. Her research explores how heat, water, and chemicals are transported through the Earth’s crust beneath the ocean, and the environmental consequences of this process across various spatial and temporal scales.
Using modern technologies and geophysical and geochemical measurements, Tominaga aims to reveal previously hidden processes in the deep sea and other extreme environments, including hydrothermal vents, ice-covered polar regions, and even oceanic worlds beyond Earth.
