A new mural in Bremen puts the partnership between the Universities of Bremen and Oldenburg on public display. With the artwork “ALLIANCE,” the Northwest Alliance joins this year’s MURAL CITY event, themed “Beauty of Science.”
In August, Bremen became an open-air gallery: Artists from around the world transformed building façades into permanent works of art. This year’s MURAL CITY event, “Beauty of Science,” brought urban art face-to-face with science and research. The project’s goal is to highlight Bremen as a hub for science while celebrating the city artistically.
The Northwest Alliance is part of that fusion of art and science. Berlin-based artist Spoare163 created the mural “ALLIANCE” for the joint alliance between the Universities of Bremen and Oldenburg. You can find the piece between the MAPEX and IMSAS murals.
Spoare163’s background is in classic style-writing graffiti. Composition, dynamism, and the interplay of color, form, and layering all play a central role in their work. Letters merge and dissolve, graphic layers build and stack, creating an image with real spatial depth.
“ALLIANCE” symbolizes the partnership between Bremen and Oldenburg. The NWA’s colors, red and blue, start out as a contrast. Where they overlap, violet emerges: A symbiosis, and a reflection of the collaboration between both locations.
It is in this way that the artwork draws a direct line to the Northwest Alliance and its mission of strengthening scientific collaboration across institutional and regional boundaries. The big questions of our time cannot be answered alone. They call for cooperation, fresh perspectives, and exchange that reaches beyond the limits of any single field. With “ALLIANCE,” that idea now has a visible presence in Bremen’s cityscape.
