The International Offices at the universities of Oldenburg and Bremen work together to leverage synergies in many areas and make a difference through combined efforts. Transcript

00:00 – 00:02
We work in several different areas.

00:02 – 00:06
Marejke Baethge-Assenkamp: Visas, housing, and how to create a welcoming environment.

Question: What makes your partnership stand out?

00:15 – 00:21
Marejke Baethge-Assenkamp: Jenka stays calm, even when things get hectic.

00:21 – 00:40
Jenka Schmidt: We like to laugh together. That’s for sure. I think it’s great how she takes a stand on issues that are important to her.

Question: What does your collaboration look like specifically?

Jenka Schmidt: We’re definitely in constant contact when it comes to onboarding, discussing which topics are important to researchers, and deciding which ones to move forward with. We also organize events for international researchers together.

00:40 – 00:56
Marejke Baethge-Assenkamp: Time and again, the topics of visas, housing, and how to create a welcoming environment come up. Together, we have a stronger voice to communicate the needs of our target groups to policymakers and academic organizations.

00:56 – 01:15
Marejke Baethge-Assenkamp: The strategic partners in the Northwest Alliance are Nelson Mandela University in South Africa for Oldenburg and Mahidol University in Thailand for Bremen. Additionally, we have close ties within Europe, including with Groningen, as well as through our YUFE alliance.

01:16 – 01:26
Jenka Schmidt: YUFE stands for Young Universities …

Marejke Baethge-Assenkamp: …for the Future of Europe. We will also explore how synergies in this area can be leveraged effectively for the Northwest Alliance.

Question: What else would you like to achieve together?

01:26 – 01:38
Jenka Schmidt: We’re currently establishing connections, and there’s already collaboration among researchers at our universities. This means international partners can also get involved.

01:38 – 01:41
Marejke Baethge-Assenkamp: This allows us to engage with international partners in a more complementary manner.

01:43 – 01:58
Jenka Schmidt: The law program in Bremen complements our profile.

Marejke Baethge-Assenkamp: The University of Bremen doesn’t offer a medical degree program per se.

Jenka Schmidt: The fact that we have a broad portfolio together that we can effectively build on makes us more attractive to the partners we want to retain or attract.
