Data Encounters Northwest: Interdisciplinary Workshop Brings Together Researchers from Bremen and Oldenburg

The Data Encounters Northwest workshop, organized by the Data Science Center (DSC) at the University of Bremen and the WiZArD – Scientific Centre for Methods of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at the University of Oldenburg, will explore the transformative potential of data-driven research.

On November 5, 2026, around 25 researchers from the universities of Bremen and Oldenburg will gather at the HWK (Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg) Institute for Advanced Study in Delmenhorst. The workshop unites computer scientists and mathematicians with expertise in advanced data analysis, AI, statistics, and machine learning, alongside researchers from diverse disciplines in order to unlock new insights from their data. Participants will collaborate in interdisciplinary teams: researchers will share their data, research questions, and domain-specific knowledge, while methodological experts will offer guidance on how to analyze and interpret it. Together, they will explore new analytical approaches, identify innovative research questions, and lay the groundwork for long-term collaborations.

Unlocking New Insights from Data

For instance, statistical models or AI systems could uncover hidden patterns in environmental and climate data. In linguistics and literary studies, natural language processing and machine learning can analyze vast textual corpora in ways that reading manually would not allow. This could help trace shifts in narratives or linguistic patterns in literature over time.

Conversely, methodologists will be able to gain valuable insights from real-world data challenges, disciplinary contexts, and research questions. A pattern-recognition algorithm may struggle with incomplete datasets, inconsistent time intervals, or measurement errors in environmental monitoring. These real-world constraints push methodologists to develop more robust, adaptable models that better reflect the complexity of actual research contexts.

The primary goal of the workshop is to foster professional exchange and spark lasting research partnerships between researchers from Bremen and Oldenburg.

The Project Team

The Data Encounters Northwest initiative is funded under the Northwest Advanced funding line of the Northwest Alliance.
Project team members from the University of Bremen include Prof. Dr. Rolf Drechsler, Prof. Dr. Nico Hochgeschwender, Prof. Dr. Martin Mundt, and Prof. Dr. Tanja Schultz; and from the University of Oldenburg: Prof. Dr. Chih-Hong Cheng, Prof. Dr. Martin Fränzle, Prof. Dr. Daniel Sonntag, and Prof. Dr. Nils Strodthoff.
Dr. Lena Steinmann from the Data Science Center at the University of Bremen and Christina Beckers from the Department for Research and Transfer at the University of Oldenburg are leading coordination efforts.
