Great Turnout at OPEN CAMPUS

Interest was already high at the opening: Numerous visitors began arriving at the university buildings, the boulevard, and the campus park starting from 1 p.m. to learn about studying, research, internships, careers, and the university’s diverse international life at more than 40 information stands.

Under the motto “Open Worlds – Share Knowledge,” numerous university staff members and volunteers were on hand to make this year’s OPEN CAMPUS a successful event.

Strong Interest in Research, Lectures, and Guided Tours

The numerous guided tours and lectures were very well attended. Interested visitors were able to listen to talks on artificial intelligence, gravity, and the POLARSTERN expedition, visit the ZARM drop tower and scientific laboratories, take a guided tour of the new Center for Deep-Sea Research, and marvel at nerve cells under the microscope. Those interested in new languages had the opportunity to participate in a language quiz.

At the Kids’ Campus, young visitors also got their money’s worth, experimenting, discovering, crafting, and playing. Through children’s lectures, kids’ labs, and hands-on activities, young explorers could get actively involved and experience science up close. The program was complemented by outdoor play equipment from the university sports department, face painting, and a balloon artist.

There was also a major stage program featuring the University of Bremen Choir, a poetry slam, concerts, and live DJ sets.

“OPEN CAMPUS has once again demonstrated just how great the interest is in science, higher education, and the diverse life on our campus,” said University of Bremen President Professor Jutta Günther. “Thousands of visitors took the opportunity to talk with researchers, students, and staff and get to know the University of Bremen up close. My heartfelt thanks go to all the staff and students whose dedication helped showcase our university to the public.”

Communicating Research in an Engaging Way

How material extraction, processing, and production might work on Mars – and what insights this could provide for a more sustainable use of resources on Earth – was the topic of a lecture by Daniel Meyer, deputy spokesperson for the new Cluster of Excellence “The Martian Mindset.”

The audience showed great interest: “OPEN CAMPUS is a wonderful opportunity to talk to people about our research. Mars may be far away, but the challenges we’re investigating there help us develop sustainable solutions for Earth. Visitors asked many exciting questions – and we’re delighted that the topic has sparked such great interest among people of all ages,” commented Meyer.

The University Sports Department was also delighted: “OPEN CAMPUS was a great opportunity for us to talk to lots of people about the University Sports offers. Our ladder golf station, in particular, was a huge hit and got both children and adults moving,” said Maximilian Schönfelder, head of the University Sports Department.

Northwest Alliance Introduces Itself

At the University Executive Board’s stand, numerous visitors took the opportunity to speak with university leadership and learn about current developments at the University of Bremen. In addition, the University Executive Board introduced the Northwest Alliance, founded in collaboration with the University of Oldenburg. The alliance’s goal is to combine excellent research with social responsibility and to find innovative solutions to regional and global challenges. There was significant interest in the collaboration between the two universities and the alliance’s joint activities.

Thanks to Sponsors and Supporters

Numerous sponsors also make OPEN CAMPUS possible. This year’s sponsors included AOK Bremen/Bremerhaven, Sparkasse Bremen, Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen, the University of Bremen Alumni Network, the University of Bremen Foundation, the “unifreunde” Association of the Friends of the University of Bremen, and the Wolfgang Ritter Foundation Bremen. Bremen Zwei, Bremen Next, and the WESER KURIER supported OPEN CAMPUS as media partners.
