Julia Anna Matz & Marie Saade

BYRD – Bremen Early Career Researcher Development and the Graduate Academy at the University of Oldenburg have been working together successfully for ten years. Dr. Julia Anna Matz and Dr. Marie Saade look back on the early days of the partnership and discuss the wide range of programs offered by both universities to support researchers in the initial stages of their careers.

Marie Saade: I think that’s what always drives us. What can we do to ensure that researchers have good structure, good working conditions, and great support services from us?

Question: When and how did you meet?

00:21 – 00:31
Julia Anna Matz: In the spring of 2016, we attended a networking event for graduate institutions in northern Germany and travelled back together by train – we had a great trip.

00:31 – 00:37
Marie Saade: And we actually had quite a bit of a conversation about career paths back then.

Question: What does your collaboration look like specifically?

00:37 – 00:42
Julia Anna Matz: We’re able to work together in a super straightforward, collegial way – it’s totally unpretentious.

00:42 – 00:52
Marie Saade: We can just call each other and ask any questions or clarify things without needing any major lead-up; it’s a very trusting collaboration.

00:52 – 01:00
Julia Anna Matz: This collaboration ensures that the offerings from both institutions are accessible. That means there’s a much wider range of opportunities available to the target group.

01:00 – 01:28
Marie Saade: First of all, we’re united by the common goal of creating a great program for doctoral students, postdocs, and researchers, and establishing solid structures that allow our scholars to work effectively. Going forward, we’ll continue to tailor our program even better to our target group. The topic of non-university careers isn’t fully addressed yet either. We want to keep collaborating on that. We’ve also launched a series on doctoral supervision for advisors.

1:28 – 01:50
Julia Anna Matz: Of course, we also hope that doctoral candidates and postdocs will connect with one another across universities – that is, network, exchange ideas, share practical knowledge, and perhaps even discuss research questions. Maybe collaborations will develop at their level as well. That would certainly be an added bonus of the partnership and definitely a positive sign for the Northwest Alliance.

What else would you like to achieve together?

1:50 – 01:58
Marie Saade: Well, I’m definitely looking forward to our continued joint work and believe that we can still accomplish quite a bit, even as we become increasingly interconnected.

01:58 – 02:08
Julia Anna Matz: I think we’re getting a glimpse of the future here, where we can jointly offer even more major events and services that we couldn’t manage on our own – and where it’s simply more efficient to do them together.
